Union Cabinet Raises EPFO Mandatory Coverage Wage Ceiling to ₹25,000
The Union Cabinet approved an increase in the EPFO wage ceiling for mandatory coverage from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 per month. The decision is expected to bring more than 51 lakh additional employees under statutory social-security coverage. Eligible workers will receive access to provident-fund, pension and linked insurance protection under the applicable schemes. The estimated additional government expenditure is about ₹11,339 crore annually, with projected expenditure of about ₹56,696 crore over five years. The reform is intended to expand formal employment coverage and strengthen long-term retirement security.

NITI Aayog Releases Ninth Trade Watch Quarterly on India’s External Trade
NITI Aayog released the ninth edition of its Trade Watch Quarterly covering the first quarter of FY27. The report states that global goods trade reached about USD 13.7 trillion in the first half of calendar 2026, while global services trade grew by 10.5%. India's total merchandise and services trade reached about USD 506.9 billion in Q1 FY27, representing 15.5% year-on-year growth. The thematic focus of the edition is India's trade in metals and ores. The publication examines trade performance amid geopolitical and trade-policy uncertainty.
Second India Electric Mobility Index Tracks State-Level EV Policy Progress
NITI Aayog released the second edition of the India Electric Mobility Index on 16 September 2026. The Union Government launched the web portal for Special Campaign 6.0 on 16 September 2026. The campaign is scheduled from 2 to 31 October 2026 and focuses on cleanliness, e-waste management and reduction of pendency in government offices. Sixteenth Commercial Coal Auction Round Set to Add More Blocks to the Mining Sector
The Ministry of Coal announced that the 16th round of commercial coal mine auctions would be launched on 17 September 2026. Across the fifteen completed rounds, 147 coal mines had been auctioned and 44 new companies had entered the sector. The auctioned mines are projected to generate annual revenue of about ₹47,500 crore and attract nearly ₹55,000 crore in capital investment. The government estimates that these auctions could create around 4.9 lakh employment opportunities across coal-bearing states. VYOMA Challenge Recognises Four Open-Source AI Solutions for Indian Use Cases

BIMSTEC Conference Advances Regional Cooperation on Traditional Knowledge and Genetic Resources
The third BIMSTEC Conference on Traditional Medicine Knowledge, Genetic Resources and Intellectual Property Rights began in Goa on 16 September 2026. The conference is being organised by the Ministry of Ayush with the All India Institute of Ayurveda in Goa serving as the nodal institute. India Protests After Pakistani Naval Vessel Collides with Indian Warship in Arabian Sea
India summoned Pakistan's Charge d'Affaires on 16 September 2026 following a naval collision in international waters in the North Arabian Sea.
