How Are Airport Runways Numbered? Magnetic Heading, Reciprocals & Parallel Rules
To an everyday airline traveler, the large two-digit numerals painted in white reflective paint at the thresholds of airport landing strips might appear as arbitrary identifiers assigned by local airport managers. In reality, airport runway numbering is governed by strict, standardized international aeronautical conventions codified by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO Annex 14) and national regulators like the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and India's Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). Runway numbers are derived directly from the physical orientation of the runway relative to Earth's magnetic compass.
A runway's designated number corresponds to its magnetic azimuth—the magnetic heading in degrees measured clockwise from magnetic north (001circ to 360circ) that an aircraft follows when lining up to take off or land. To establish the official two-digit designation, aviation authorities take the magnetic compass heading, round it to the nearest ten degrees, and drop the final trailing zero. For instance, a runway aligned along a magnetic heading of 094circ rounds to 090circ and is designated as Runway 09. A runway pointing toward 274circ rounds to 270circ, becoming Runway 27. Due to rounding, runway numbers range strictly from 01 to 36; a heading pointing directly toward magnetic north (360circ) is labeled Runway 36, as Runway 00 does not exist in aviation nomenclature.
Because aircraft land and take off into prevailing winds to maximize wing aerodynamic lift and reduce ground roll, every physical paved strip of concrete functions as two distinct operational runways depending on traffic direction. The two opposing threshold directions are exact magnetic reciprocals separated by 180circ. Mathematically, the numbers assigned to opposite ends of any runway always differ by exactly eighteen (for example, 27−09=18, or 22−04=18). When airports construct two or three parallel runways pointing in the identical magnetic direction, letters are appended from the approaching pilot's perspective: L (Left), R (Right), and C (Center). Additionally, because Earth's magnetic north pole drifts over time due to core convection currents, airport authorities must periodically renumber and repaint runways when magnetic headings shift past rounding boundaries.
