Karst Topography: Formation, Chemical Weathering & Cave Landforms

Surface karst features progress through a defined morphological hierarchy: small etched dissolution grooves and sharp pinnacles on bare rock are called Lapies (or Karren); funnel-shaped surface depressions where water sinks are termed Sinkholes (or Dolines); the coalescence of multiple adjacent dolines forms an elongated composite depression called an Uvala; and colossal, flat-floored tectonic depressions with underground drainage are known as Poljes. Subterraneously, cave environments display stunning secondary mineral deposits known as Speleothems: descending icicle-shaped calcium carbonate formations are Stalactites; mineral mounds growing upward from cave floors where saturated droplets splash are Stalagmites; and when both formations merge, they solidify into a continuous Cave Column or Pillar.
