Karst Topography: Formation, Chemical Weathering & Cave Landforms
In physical geomorphology, hydrogeology, and karstology, a Karst Landscape is a distinctive topography sculpted predominantly by the chemical dissolution of highly soluble carbonate bedrock—most commonly limestone (calcium carbonate, CaCO3​), dolomite (calcium magnesium carbonate, CaMg(CO3​)2​), or gypsum (CaSO4​cdot2H2​O)—by weakly acidic meteoric groundwater. The term originates from the classical "Karst" plateau region (known as Kras in Slovenian), a barren limestone plateau along the Dinaric Alps spanning Slovenia, Italy, and Croatia where these geomorphological phenomena were first scientifically investigated. Karst terrains are characterized by a dramatic scarcity of permanent surface drainage streams, as surface runoff rapidly sinks underground through fissures, carving out extensive subterranean cave labyrinths, underground rivers, and spectacular mineral formations.
The chemical genesis of karst topography is governed by the process of Carbonation. Pure rainwater is naturally neutral, but as atmospheric precipitation falls through the air and percolates through decaying organic matter in topsoil, it absorbs carbon dioxide (CO2​), reacting to form weak Carbonic Acid: H2​O+CO2​ightleftharpoonsH2​CO3​. When this acidic groundwater seeps into jointed limestone bedrock along bedding planes and vertical fractures, it dissolves the insoluble solid calcium carbonate, converting it into highly soluble Calcium Bicarbonate: CaCO3​+H2​CO3​oCa(HCO3​)2​. Over geologic epochs, the continuous chemical removal of dissolved limestone widens microscopic joints into cavernous conduits, leading to surface collapses and creating a suite of distinctive erosional landforms.
Surface karst features progress through a defined morphological hierarchy: small etched dissolution grooves and sharp pinnacles on bare rock are called Lapies (or Karren); funnel-shaped surface depressions where water sinks are termed Sinkholes (or Dolines); the coalescence of multiple adjacent dolines forms an elongated composite depression called an Uvala; and colossal, flat-floored tectonic depressions with underground drainage are known as Poljes. Subterraneously, cave environments display stunning secondary mineral deposits known as Speleothems: descending icicle-shaped calcium carbonate formations are Stalactites; mineral mounds growing upward from cave floors where saturated droplets splash are Stalagmites; and when both formations merge, they solidify into a continuous Cave Column or Pillar. Globally, world-renowned karst regions include the tower karst of Guilin in southern China and Mammoth Cave in Kentucky; in India, famous karst landforms are found at the Borra Caves in Andhra Pradesh, the Kutumsar Caves in Chhattisgarh, and the extensive subterranean limestone cave networks of Meghalaya (including Mawsmai Cave and Krem Liat Prah).
