What Is a Rain Shadow Region? Geographic Concepts & Indian Examples

In physical geography and climatology, a rain shadow region refers to an area of land that has become dry and semi-arid because a topographic barrier, such as a mountain range, blocks the passage of rain-producing weather systems. This meteorological condition is an inevitable consequence of orographic precipitation, which governs how air masses interact with elevated terrain. As moisture-saturated winds approach an elevated topographic barrier, they are forced upward along the windward slope. This compression results in dry adiabatic warming at approximately 10 degrees Celsius per kilometer. As the temperature of the descending air rises, its relative humidity drops sharply, creating dry, moisture-deficient winds (analogous to the Föhn or Chinook winds). Consequently, clouds dissipate, precipitation is inhibited, and the terrain situated downwind of the mountain range remains deprived of seasonal rainfall, forming a classic rain shadow zone.

The most prominent example is the vast interior of the Deccan Plateau, situated directly to the east of the Western Ghats. While coastal cities like Mumbai and Mangalore receive over 2,200 to 3,500 millimeters of annual precipitation, locations situated merely 100 to 150 kilometers inland—such as Pune, Ahmednagar, and the drought-prone agrarian districts of Marathwada and Rayalaseema—receive less than 500 to 700 millimeters. A second profound example is the high-altitude cold desert of Ladakh, which lies nestled in the trans-Himalayan zone behind the towering wall of the Greater Himalayas.
