In arid and semi-arid geomorphology, a yardang is an elongated, wind-sculpted bedrock ridge aligned parallel to the prevailing direction of dominant unidirectional winds. Unlike loose sand dunes that represent depositional features, yardangs are erosional landforms carved into cohesive sediments or consolidated bedrock. The term was introduced to international physical geography by the Swedish explorer Sven Hedin in 1903, derived from the Uighur word yar, signifying a steep bank or clay ridge observed during his historical expeditions across the Lop Nor desert basin in Central Asia. Yardangs range in scale from micro-ridges measured in centimeters to colossal mega-yardangs stretching several kilometers in length and rising tens of meters above desert plains.
The genesis of a yardang involves the dual aerodynamic mechanisms of wind deflation and sand abrasion. Wind deflation removes loose, fine-grained dust and clay particles, while wind-driven saltating sand grains—concentrated predominantly within the lowest two meters of the atmospheric boundary layer—abrade and polish the exposed rock faces through mechanical corrasion. Over centuries of persistent wind shear, differential erosion sculpts the rock into a distinctive streamlined shape resembling the inverted hull of an ocean-going vessel or a keel. The windward prow faces the oncoming air stream with a steep, blunt, undercut cliff, while the leeward tail tapers gently into a streamlined spine, minimizing turbulence and aerodynamic resistance.
Geomorphologists distinguish yardangs from other desert erosional landforms such as zeugen through structural bedding orientation. While zeugen develop in horizontally stratified rock layers capped by a resistant tabular rock stratum, yardangs develop in vertically tilted, folded strata or homogenous cohesive lacustrine and fluvial mudstones. The worldwide distribution of prominent yardang fields includes the Lut Desert of Iran (where massive yardangs are known locally as kaluts), the Borkou depression of northern Chad, the Qaidam Basin of China, and the coastal deserts of Peru. Planetary geologists have also identified extensive yardang complexes across Mars, particularly within the Medusae Fossae Formation, demonstrating that persistent wind regimes shape planetary surfaces even in thin carbon dioxide atmospheres.
