Rock-Cut Architecture: Subtractive Engineering, Ellora & Ancient Temples
In architectural history, archaeological engineering, and ancient Indian art, Rock-Cut Architecture represents the extraordinary practice of sculpting monumental structures, religious shrines, and subterranean halls directly out of naturally occurring, living rock cliffs or monolithic bedrock hills. Early Buddhist and Jain mendicant monks required tranquil, weather-proof monastic retreats (Viharas) and assembly prayer halls (Chaityas) for meditation during the rainy monsoon season (Vassa).
