The Caspian Sea is the world's largest inland, enclosed body of water, covering an immense surface area of approximately three hundred and seventy-one thousand square kilometers—exceeding the territorial landmass of Germany or Japan. Situated at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, it holds roughly seventy-eight thousand cubic kilometers of water, representing over forty percent of all lacustrine (lake) water on the planet. Despite being completely surrounded by land and lacking any natural, open-water navigable connection to the global World Ocean, it has been designated as a "Sea" across human history, cartography, and international diplomacy rather than a conventional lake.
The classification of the Caspian Sea as a sea is grounded in three compelling physical dimensions: its sheer oceanic scale, its saline chemistry, and its deep geological ancestry. Chemically, the Caspian Sea is brackish rather than fresh, possessing an average salinity of approximately twelve parts per thousand (one point two percent), which is roughly one-third the salinity of normal ocean seawater (thirty-five parts per thousand). Geologically, the Caspian is not an ordinary continental freshwater depression; it is an authentic relict of the ancient Paratethys Sea (a remnant of the prehistoric Tethys Ocean) that became landlocked approximately five point five million years ago due to continental tectonic collisions and the uplift of the Caucasus and Elburz mountain ranges. Crucially, the deep southern basin of the Caspian Sea features a genuine oceanic basaltic crust—reaching depths of over one thousand and twenty-five meters—a hallmark of true marine basins.
Hydrologically, the Caspian Sea operates as an endorheic basin, meaning that it receives vast inflows from major rivers (principally the Volga River, which supplies roughly eighty percent of all river discharge, alongside the Ural, Kura, and Terek rivers) but possesses zero marine outflows. Water exits the Caspian solely through surface atmospheric evaporation, leaving its elevation at approximately twenty-seven to twenty-eight meters below global Mean Sea Level. Geopolitically, the debate over whether the Caspian is a "sea" or a "lake" held colossal economic ramifications under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
