Why Does February Have Fewer Days? Roman Lunar Calendar, Numa Pompilius & Leap Years
In the modern civil Gregorian calendar used internationally today, eleven of the twelve months contain either thirty or thirty-one days, while February anomalously contains only twenty-eight days in common years and twenty-nine days during quadrennial leap years. This calendar discrepancy is not the result of an arbitrary modern decision; rather, it is the direct historical inheritance of ancient Roman calendar development, astronomical adjustments, and religious superstitions surrounding numbers spanning more than two millennia.
The original Roman calendar, traditionally attributed to Rome's legendary founder Romulus in the eighth century BCE, was a ten-month lunar-solar calendar beginning in the spring with Martius (March) and concluding with December. This calendar comprised only 304 days distributed across ten named months. The winter interval between the end of December and the vernal equinox was left unorganized into named months because agricultural harvesting, civic elections, and military campaigns ceased during the harsh winter cold.
Around 713 BCE, Rome's second king, Numa Pompilius, reformed the calendar to synchronize it with the lunar year of approximately 355 days. Numa added two winter months at the end of the year: Januarius and Februarius (derived from Februa, the Roman festival of ritual purification and atonement). Because ancient Roman religious superstition held that even numbers were inherently unlucky, Numa altered existing months to have an odd number of days (29 or 31). However, to reach a mathematically necessary annual total of 355 days from an odd sum, one month was required to contain an even number of days. Februarius, dedicated to rites of purification and honoring the dead, was designated as this unlucky month and assigned 28 days.
Centuries later, when Julius Caesar reformed the dysfunctional calendar in 46 BCE with the assistance of Alexandrian astronomer Sosigenes, he abandoned the lunar cycle for a solar year of 365.25 days. Caesar added ten days across various months, moved the new year to January 1, and introduced a leap year adding one day to February every four years, permanently fixing February's shortened status in world history.
