Mastering CBSE Class 10 Chemical Equations & Reactions
1. Law of Conservation of Mass
Matter can neither be created nor destroyed in a chemical reaction. The total mass of elements present in the products of a chemical reaction has to be equal to the total mass of elements present in the reactants.
2. Coefficients vs Subscripts
Subscripts define molecular formulas and valency ratios (e.g., H₂O). To balance atoms, you must ONLY change the stoichiometric coefficients written in front of formulas (e.g., 2H₂O), never the subscripts.
3. The 5 Core Reaction Families
NCERT Class 10 classifies chemical reactions into Combination, Decomposition (thermal, electrolytic, photolytic), Displacement, Double Displacement (precipitation), and Redox (oxidation-reduction).
4. Physical States & Conditions
A complete board-exam chemical equation includes physical state notations: solid (s), liquid (l), gas (g), and aqueous solution (aq). Specific reaction conditions such as temperature (Δ), pressure, and catalysts are written above or below the arrow.
