What Is an Atoll? Coral Reef Formation, Darwin Subsidence & Anatomy
An Atoll is a ring-shaped or annular coral reef, island, or chain of small islets (motus) encircling a central body of shallow water termed a Lagoon. The word originates from the native Dhivehi (Maldivian) language term "atholhu," reflecting the prominence of these marine features across the tropical Indian and Pacific oceans. Unlike continental islands formed by lithospheric fragmentation or granitic uplift, atolls are biogenic geological structures: they are constructed entirely through the biological secretion of calcium carbonate (CaCO3​) skeletons by colonies of microscopic marine invertebrates called hermatypic (stony) coral polyps, in mutualistic symbiosis with photosynthetic dinoflagellates known as zooxanthellae.
The scientific foundation explaining how atolls form was established by the British naturalist Charles Darwin during his historic voyage aboard HMS Beagle, published in 1842 as "The Structure and Distribution of Coral Reefs." Darwin's Subsidence Theory of Coral Reef Formation elucidates that an atoll represents the final evolutionary phase in the life cycle of a sinking oceanic volcanic island. The process initiates when an undersea hotspot erupts, pushing an oceanic basaltic volcano above sea level. In Stage 1, warm, clear tropical waters allow coral larvae to colonize the shallow littoral perimeter, forming a Fringing Reef attached directly to the island's shoreline.
Over millions of years, the moving oceanic tectonic plate carries the volcanic island away from its magmatic hotspot, causing the dense oceanic crust beneath the volcano to cool, contract, and gradually subside (sink) into the ocean. In Stage 2, as the island sinks, hermatypic corals continuously grow upward toward sunlight at rates of several millimeters per year; this upward growth maintains the reef crest near sea level, creating a wide, deep lagoon separating the outer reef from the diminishing island—forming a Barrier Reef. In Stage 3, the central volcanic peak subsides entirely beneath the ocean surface. The upward-growing corals persist at the perimeter, leaving an annular coral rim enclosing a shallow central lagoon: a mature Atoll. Deep boreholes drilled into atolls in the twentieth century (such as at Enewetak Atoll) conclusively verified Darwin's theory by finding hundreds of meters of shallow-water coral limestone resting directly upon ancient basaltic volcanic bedrock.
